the saxophone does require a lot of breath and air and short air breaks if you want to sound good. the pro's make it sound like they don't even stop for air. but for first- timers, it'll be hard...

It takes a bit, but after practicing with it for a while (couple months) you don't even notice that you are taking deeper and larger breaths because it becomes natural for you.
