They were the only band that made it within this unusual genre.

They were a 70s fusion (jazz/rock) band. Acts like Chick Corea, Return to Forever, & Mahavishnu Orchestra were more or less the same as them. Lots of prog rock listeners think highly of them.

"Birdland" was the closest thing to a hit.

Birdland is the signature piece by Weather Report. Charlie Parker, legendary sax player, was called "the bird." It's a tribute to him.

How were they the only band to make it within the jazz fusion genre? I would say Miles Davis, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Reurn to Forever, Pat Metheny Group and many others made it pretty well too.

Weather Report is best known for the song Birdland from the album Heavy Weather in 1977. One of my favorite albums of all time. Other great ones are Black Market, Sweetnighter, Tale Spinnin', and Weather Report (self-titled debut).

Birdland! And they were jazz fusion. My long passed brother from another Jaco Patorius was a member of them. Their music still inspires young people today since a lot of their music has been transcribed for high school jazz bands to play.
